PROJECT DESTINATION

Located along Kenya’s northern coastline, Kilifi is one of East Africa’s hidden conservation treasures. The region is famous for its pristine beaches, mangrove forests, coral reefs, and rich marine biodiversity. Volunteers work alongside conservation teams to protect these fragile ecosystems while supporting local communities that depend on healthy oceans for their livelihoods.

Project activities may include mangrove restoration, beach clean-ups, biodiversity monitoring, environmental awareness campaigns, marine research support, and community outreach initiatives. During your free time, you can explore Kilifi Creek, enjoy water sports, visit nearby beaches, or experience Kenya’s vibrant Swahili culture.

A friendly face from our Base Team will be ready to meet you at the airport and drive you to our Volunteer Accommodation. Just look out for the Volunteer Safari Initiative sign!

Upon arrival, you'll receive a comprehensive induction to prepare you for project work, local culture, people, and wildlife. This orientation will also cover essential safety information.

PROJECT DESTINATION DETAILS

Accommodation
Volunteers typically stay in comfortable shared rooms at our volunteer house. These accommodations are often located within close proximity to the project site, facilitating easy access to the school and community.
Three meals a day will be provided, featuring a mix of local Kenyan Cuisine and familiar international dishes. Special dietary needs will be catered for.
Kenya has a few different cellular network providers, for which sim cards can be purchased from most shops or at the airport. Various package options allow for phone calls and/or data usage. At the volunteer House, there is free WiFi to enable you to make contact back home.
Kilifi has a tropical climate characterized by hot and humid conditions throughout the year. The city experiences two distinct seasons: a dry season from December to March and a wet season from April to November. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), with occasional spikes during the hotter months. Volunteers should pack lightweight and breathable clothing, as well as sun protection, to stay comfortable in the warm weather.

PROJECT TASK

  • Coral Reef Restoration – Assist with coral nursery maintenance, coral planting and restoration activities to help rebuild damaged reef habitats.
  • Marine Life Monitoring – Support the collection and recording of information about fish, coral and other marine species.
  • Beach Clean-Up – Collect and sort plastic and other marine debris to help keep the coastal environment clean and protect marine life.
  • Seagrass Conservation – Participate in activities that monitor and protect seagrass habitats, which provide important breeding and feeding grounds for marine species.
  • Marine Biodiversity Surveys – Help conservation teams observe and document marine species and ecosystem conditions.
  • Environmental Education – Support awareness activities that educate local communities and students about ocean conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.
  • Community Conservation – Engage with local communities and learn how residents participate in protecting Kuruwitu’s marine ecosystem.
  • Conservation Data & Research – Assist with basic data collection, recording and research activities that support ongoing marine conservation work.
  • Marine Pollution Awareness – Help raise awareness about plastic pollution, waste management and its impact on oceans and marine wildlife.
