Join us on an extraordinary wildlife conservation experience at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, where you will have the opportunity to contribute to the protection of some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife while gaining valuable practical conservation experience.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is one of Kenya’s leading wildlife conservation areas and is renowned for its commitment to protecting endangered species, restoring natural habitats and supporting sustainable conservation initiatives.

As a volunteer, you will work alongside experienced conservation teams and participate in activities that support wildlife monitoring, habitat conservation, environmental protection and community awareness. The experience provides an opportunity to learn about the challenges facing African wildlife and the practical approaches being used to protect biodiversity.

The program is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, students, gap-year travelers, conservation students and anyone looking for a meaningful volunteer experience in Kenya.

Beyond the conservation work, volunteers have the opportunity to experience the beauty of Kenya’s Laikipia region and gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between wildlife, conservation and local communities.

Project Highlights

Protecting Iconic Species: Join us in safeguarding the Big Five—lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes—from poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. Your efforts will directly contribute to the preservation of these iconic and endangered species.

  • Hands-On Conservation Work: Get involved in various conservation activities, including wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration, and community engagement initiatives. Work alongside experienced conservationists and gain practical skills in wildlife management and environmental stewardship.
  • Habitat Restoration: Contribute to habitat restoration projects aimed at restoring degraded ecosystems and creating sustainable habitats for the Big Five and other wildlife species. Participate in tree planting, invasive species removal, and land rehabilitation efforts.

A friendly face from our Base Team will be ready to meet you at the airport and drive you to our Volunteer Accommodation. Just look out for the Volunteer Safari Initiative sign!

SAFETY

Upon arrival, you'll receive a comprehensive induction to prepare you for project work, local culture, people, and wildlife. This orientation will also cover essential safety information.

Our Volunteer Safari Initiative base teams provide 24/7 support, ensuring you have an incredible and unforgettable experience in Africa.

PROJECT DESTINATION DETAILS

Accommodation
Volunteers typically stay in comfortable shared rooms at our volunteer house. These accommodations are often located within close proximity to the project site, facilitating easy access to the school and community.
Three meals a day will be provided, featuring a mix of local Kenyan Cuisine and familiar international dishes. Special dietary needs will be catered for.
Kenya has a few different cellular network providers, for which sim cards can be purchased from most shops or at the airport. Various package options allow for phone calls and/or data usage. At the volunteer House, there is free WiFi to enable you to make contact back home.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy, situated in Nanyuki, Kenya, boasts a diverse climate reflective of its varied landscapes. Characterized by a semi-arid climate, the region experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. During the dry season, which typically spans from June to October, temperatures soar, and rainfall is minimal, creating arid conditions. Conversely, the wet season, from November to May, brings cooler temperatures and sporadic rainfall, rejuvenating the landscape and supporting lush vegetation. This climatic diversity contributes to Ol Pejeta’s rich biodiversity, offering volunteers a dynamic and ever-changing environment to engage in wildlife conservation efforts.

PROJECT TASK

  • Wildlife Monitoring: Assist in wildlife monitoring activities, including tracking the movements and behaviors of the Big Five and other key species.
  • Habitat Restoration:Engage in habitat restoration projects, such as tree planting, bush clearing, and erosion control, to improve habitat quality for wildlife.
  • Anti-Poaching Efforts: Support anti-poaching patrols by accompanying rangers on monitoring missions and providing logistical assistance.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collect field data on wildlife populations, habitat conditions, and human-wildlife interactions, following established protocols and methodologies.
