Safety and Planning Tips
At VSI, we prioritize the well-being and security of our volunteers from their arrival until the completion of their volunteering journey.
Throughout the process of booking your placement, our dedicated Destination Managers will assist you, addressing any inquiries and providing you with the necessary information to ready you for your volunteering experience.
Upon arrival at your designated location, a member of the VSI team will greet you at the airport and ensure your safe transfer to the project accommodation. Additionally, safe transportation will be arranged from the volunteer base to various project sites in local communities, national parks, or towns for volunteer activities.
Upon arrival, all volunteers undergo a thorough induction program designed to prepare you for project work. You’ll receive briefings on local culture, people, wildlife, and essential safety protocols. Throughout your stay, you’ll be accommodated in volunteer housing alongside our dedicated team, who provide around-the-clock support.
Some of the Safety Tips while Volunteering in Kenya
- Inform your Destination Manager and the project team if you are taking any medication.
- Notify your on-site project manager whenever you leave the volunteer accommodation, whether you’re visiting the local town or going to the shops.
- When withdrawing money from an ATM, take out smaller amounts and avoid carrying too much cash.
- Make photocopies of your passport, insurance information, and other important documents to keep with you.
- Always follow the instructions of your volunteer coordinator or project manager.
- Never venture out alone.
- Check with your project manager about the safety of drinking tap water in your location; in some places, only bottled water is recommended.
- Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen – the African sun can be very intense, so bring sun protection and a water bottle.
- Always listen to field guides and project staff when interacting with wildlife.
Behave responsibly and follow the Code of Conduct to ensure your safety and that of your fellow volunteers.
Planning Tips
Research various volunteer programs in Kenya to find one that aligns with your interests, skills, and values. Consider factors such as project duration, cost, location, and types of volunteer work available.
Understand the requirements and expectations of the volunteer program, including any specific skills or qualifications needed, program fees, and accommodations provided.
Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months’ validity and obtain any required visas or permits for your volunteer program in Kenya. Carry copies of important documents, including your passport, travel insurance, and vaccination records.
Create a budget for your volunteer trip, including program fees, flights, accommodations, meals, transportation, and personal expenses. Factor in any additional costs for travel insurance, vaccinations, and excursions.
Pack light and smart for your volunteer trip, including essential items such as clothing suitable for the local climate, sturdy shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, first-aid kit, and any specialized equipment needed for your volunteer work.
Familiarize yourself with basic Swahili phrases and greetings to facilitate communication with locals during your volunteer program. Learning a few words in the local language shows respect and helps you connect with the community.
Keep an open mind and be flexible during your volunteer program in Kenya. Embrace cultural differences, adapt to new environments, and be willing to step out of your comfort zone to make the most of your experience.
