This volunteer program is based in Lumo Conservancy, a community-owned wildlife conservation area in the Taita-Taveta region of southern Kenya. The conservancy provides an important habitat for wildlife and plays a significant role in protecting biodiversity while supporting the livelihoods of surrounding communities.

As a volunteer, you will participate in practical conservation activities designed to support wildlife, protect the environment and promote sustainable conservation. Working alongside local conservation teams, you will gain a better understanding of the challenges facing wildlife and the importance of involving local communities in conservation.

SAFETY

Upon arrival, you'll receive a comprehensive induction to prepare you for project work, local culture, people, and wildlife. This orientation will also cover essential safety information.

Our Volunteer Safari Initiative base teams provide 24/7 support, ensuring you have an incredible and unforgettable experience in Africa.

PROJECT DESTINATION DETAILS

Accommodation
Volunteers typically stay in comfortable shared rooms at our volunteer house. These accommodations are often located within close proximity to the project site, facilitating easy access to the school and community.
Three meals a day will be provided, featuring a mix of local Kenyan Cuisine and familiar international dishes. Special dietary needs will be catered for.
Kenya has a few different cellular network providers, for which sim cards can be purchased from most shops or at the airport. Various package options allow for phone calls and/or data usage. At the volunteer House, there is free WiFi to enable you to make contact back home.
Lumo Conservancy in Tsavo East National Park, Kenya, features a semi-arid climate with hot, dry conditions prevailing for much of the year. The region experiences two main seasons: a long dry season from June to October, with temperatures exceeding 30°C (86°F), and a short rainy season from November to December, bringing sporadic showers. Despite occasional rainfall, humidity levels remain low, contributing to the arid landscape. From January to May, temperatures rise further, creating challenging conditions for both wildlife and visitors. However, Lumo Conservancy’s diverse ecosystem remains resilient, offering a unique opportunity to witness Africa’s wildlife in its natural habitat.

PROJECT TASK

  • Conservation Work: Assist local conservationists in vital research and monitoring projects aimed at protecting endangered species and their habitats.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with local communities to raise awareness about conservation issues and promote sustainable practices.
  • Education Initiatives: Support educational programs that teach children and adults about the importance of wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship.
  • Field Excursions: Explore Kenya’s renowned national parks and reserves, such as Maasai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo, while honing your photography skills and learning about the country’s rich biodiversity.
