Wildlife Conservation Volunteer & Kilimanjaro Climbing Program

Project Descriptions

Experience the best of East Africa through a unique combination of wildlife conservation, community-based conservation and mountain adventure.

Our Wildlife Conservation & Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Adventure gives volunteers the opportunity to spend time supporting conservation activities at Lumo Conservancy in Kenya before taking on the unforgettable challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa’s highest mountain.

The program has been designed for travelers who want more than a traditional holiday. It combines meaningful volunteer work with an adventurous mountain expedition, allowing participants to contribute to wildlife conservation while experiencing some of the most spectacular landscapes in East Africa.

During the conservation component, volunteers participate in activities that support wildlife, habitat protection, environmental conservation and community-based conservation initiatives. Participants gain practical knowledge of the relationship between wildlife, local communities and sustainable tourism.

After completing the conservation placement, the adventure continues with a guided Mount Kilimanjaro trekking experience. Depending on the selected itinerary, participants will trek through changing ecological zones, from cultivated land and rainforest to moorland, alpine desert and the high-altitude summit environment.

PROJECT DESTINATION

Lumo Conservancy, Kenya

The conservation component of the program takes place at Lumo Conservancy in Kenya’s Taita-Taveta region.

Lumo is a community-owned wildlife conservation area that plays an important role in protecting wildlife and natural habitats while creating opportunities for surrounding communities.

The conservancy forms part of an important wildlife ecosystem in southern Kenya and provides an opportunity for volunteers to learn about community-based conservation and the challenges involved in protecting wildlife outside traditional national park settings.

During your stay, you will experience the African bush while participating in conservation activities under the guidance of the local project team.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Following the conservation experience in Kenya, participants travel to Tanzania for the second part of the program: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

At approximately 5,895 metres above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s most recognizable trekking destinations.

The climb takes participants through several distinct ecological zones, offering dramatic changes in vegetation, scenery and climate as the altitude increases.

The trek requires physical preparation and mental determination, but participants are supported by an experienced mountain crew throughout the expedition.

The summit attempt is the highlight of the adventure, offering spectacular views and a strong sense of achievement for those who successfully reach the summit.
